Drawing in bister and reed pen on paper with no watermark. Otto Benesch dates this drawing ± 1657. The scene is 1.Samuel 28: Saul is afraid of the Filistines, and consults a woman ‘who has the mind of a prophetess’

 

The miracle of the floating axe

This drawing used to be reckoned among the early works of Rembrandt, nowadays it is thought to stem from a later date, ± 1653. The watermark(fool’s cap with monogram FC) is typical for this later period. The disciples of Elisa have dropped a borrowed axe in the water.The prophet takes a piece of wood, throws it to where the axe disappeared and says: “take it up”. And the other stretched out his hand and took it (2 Kings 6:1-7).

This was drawn on a loose sheet of paper with no watermark, date and signature have been added later by a different hand. The drawing probably originated during Rembrandt’s trip to Bredevoort with Hendrickje Stoffels in 1649.

Pen and brush drawing in bister on Italian paper. The watermark is “circle and crossbow”, datable ± 1640-50. The drawing has also been attributed to Nicolaas Maes.

Pen drawing in bister, washed in bister and India ink. Watermark “Strassbourg lily” in coat of arms with monogram PR. The drawing used to be dated ± 1635, but only after 1653 Rembrandt had this kind of paper in stock.

The watermark is “Strassbourg coat of arms” with the monogram of the Swiss paper manufacturer Nicolaus Heusler. This kind of paper was imported a lot into the Netherlands before 1648.Another composition like this exists, but without the entourage and without the multitude of unclear, superfluous scribbles, which is considered a genuine Rembrandt.
