After Luke 24:13 ff. The disciples invite Jesus in, saying "stay with us, for it is evening...". From the long shadows in the painting we can see that it is indeed evening.

Shepherds near a classical ruin

Used to be called "the prodigal son as a swineherd", but there are no swine in the picture. So "landscape with shepherds" seems a better designation. Bredius thought the ruins were a Vesta temple. It is possibly one of Moeyaert's earliest works.
