Van Laer was the first, early 17th c., to develop the painting of cattle, a genre later perfected by a.o. Adriaen van de Velde, Dujardin and Paulus Potter. This may be Van Laer's earliest surviving cattle painting.
It is striking that the angel is standing on the earth. In other such paintings, he is always floating in the air or standing on a cloud.
